From\ntransverse scans, images of the coronal and sagittal sections were reconstructed using a programmed\ncomputer. From these images, the maximum area of the right and left lobe (Ar and Al) and\nthe maximum thickness of both lobes (Tr and Tl) of the thyroid gland were measured. From the\nactual weight of thyroid that had been removed from patients with Graves' disease, measured at\nthe time of thyroidectomy, a regression equation of 0.766×(Ar×Tr+Al×Tl) was obtained.\nThe normal thyroid volume was 12.3±4.6 ml (mean±SD, n=56), which correlated significantly\nwith the individual's height, body weight and body surface area. Men had significantly larger\nthyroid glands than women.\nThe mean thyroid volume in patients with untreated hyperthyroid Graves' disease was 38.2±\n17.5 ml which correlated significantly with the individual's serum thyroid hormone concentrations.\nPatients in a remission of hyperthyroidism had significantly smaller thyroid volumes than untreated\npatients. The mean thyroid volume in patients with hypothyroid Hashimoto's thyroiditis was\n27.3±16.3 ml. The thyroid glands in patients with late-onset hypothyroidism after radioiodine\ntherapy and patients with Sheehan's syndrome were not visible with ultrasonography.
