| 内容記述 | This paper discusses the senses of English prepositions at, on, and in followed by the gerund from a cognitive semantic point of view. We especially focus on the differences with previous analyses of the locative senses and the temporal senses of these prepositions. It is said that the gerund can express both a general situation and a concrete situation. This paper claims that these two patterns have an influence on how the temporal senses of at, on, and in followed by the gerund developed. As for the preposition at, not the sense of a point, which has been often discussed, but its abstract sense of a place plays an important role of introducing a situation loosely that the following gerund expresses. |
