内容記述 | Thyroid gland volume was determined using a newly developed ultrasound method. From transverse scans, images of the coronal and sagittal sections were reconstructed using a programmed computer. From these images, the maximum area of the right and left lobe (Ar and Al) and the maximum thickness of both lobes (Tr and Tl) of the thyroid gland were measured. From the actual weight of thyroid that had been removed from patients with Graves' disease, measured at the time of thyroidectomy, a regression equation of 0.766×(Ar×Tr+Al×Tl) was obtained. The normal thyroid volume was 12.3±4.6 ml (mean±SD, n=56), which correlated significantly with the individual's height, body weight and body surface area. Men had significantly larger thyroid glands than women. The mean thyroid volume in patients with untreated hyperthyroid Graves' disease was 38.2± 17.5 ml which correlated significantly with the individual's serum thyroid hormone concentrations. Patients in a remission of hyperthyroidism had significantly smaller thyroid volumes than untreated patients. The mean thyroid volume in patients with hypothyroid Hashimoto's thyroiditis was 27.3±16.3 ml. The thyroid glands in patients with late-onset hypothyroidism after radioiodine therapy and patients with Sheehan's syndrome were not visible with ultrasonography. While, patients with hypothyroidism due to thyroid-stimulation blocking antibodies had thyroid volumes within the normal range. The determinati on of thyroid volume with this method can be utilized for investigation of physiological thyroid growth in normal subjects and pathological thyroid growth in patients with various thyroidal diseases. |
